Joel Embiid has finally made his online presence felt after the Philadelphia 76ers landed LeBron James in free agency. But he appeared to be more focused on a different sport.
The Sixers center had been conspicuously silent throughout an offseason that saw his team acquire both James and All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown in the span of a month. On Monday night, Embiid took to social media to express his excitement for a Philly sports team. It just may not the one that plays basketball.
“I have a GOOD feeling about October,” Embiid posted on X. “The playoffs are gonna be FUN!!!!”

The first part could have been interpreted to be about the beginning of the NBA season, with the new hoops year starting in October. But then he mentioned the playoffs, which suggested Joel was talking about the Philadelphia Phillies. The sad part about it for Philly sports fans was that Embiid seemed to be sarcastically mocking the team.
The Phillies rallied back from a 5-2 deficit against the Pittsburgh Pirates to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the 9th inning at loanDepot Park in Miami, Fla. Phillies closer Jhoan Duran then proceeded to yield 5 hits and a hit-by-pitch to blow the save in an 8-7 walk-off loss.

The Marlins entered Monday on a 12-game losing streak. They became the first team in nearly 25 years to snap a losing streak of 12+ games after trailing by multiple runs coming into the 9th inning.
The Phillies remain right in the thick of the Wild Card race and appear headed toward a 5th consecutive postseason appearance. But Embiid doesn’t sound hopeful about the team’s chances once they get there.
