Johan Santana signed by Blue Jays to minor league deal
Johan Santana’s baseball career is not over yet.
Despite undergoing surgery to repair a torn capsule in his shoulder twice — he missed all of 2011 and 2013 as he recovered — Santana is continuing his career.
The Blue Jays announced Thursday they have signed the two-time Cy Young Award winner to a minor-league deal. Santana will be invited to the team’s big league spring training, giving him a shot to make the roster.
In addition to his shoulder surgeries, Santana tore his Achilles’ tendon last year while pitching in the Orioles’ organization.
It would be foolish to expect Santana to be able to deliver anything for the Jays this season, but we’re not giving up hope, and neither is Toronto. After all, one of Santana’s 21 starts for the Mets in 2012 was a no-hitter. Maybe he still has some life left.
