Though Verlander’s season numbers aren’t especially great — he has a 3.90 ERA and 1.30 WHIP this year — his August numbers have been very good. The former Cy Young award winner is 3-1 with a 2.50 ERA this month and is holding opponents to a .180 batting average.
Verlander already cleared revocable waivers, meaning the only hurdle that might impede a trade is the $56 million he’s owed over the next two seasons. Teams have until the end of the month to trade for a player who has cleared waivers.
