Blue Jays center fielder Kevin Pillar has been one of the best defensive center fielders in baseball this season, and he displayed why on Friday night.
Pillar broke immediately after the line drive hit by Rays catcher Luke Maile and made a flying catch to rob him of extra bases.
That’s a Superman style flying catch, and one of the best defensive plays you’ll see all season. It’s even more impressive considering how willingly he gives up his body to make the catch with the knowledge that he’s going to have to land on the unforgiving Tropicana Field turf. The Blue Jays continue to add exclamation point after exclamation point to their season, having clinched their first AL East title in 22 years on Wednesday. They are looking like one of the most dangerous teams heading into the postseason.
