Kirk Gibson, Alan Trammell fired by Diamondbacks

Kirk-Gibson-skips-sons-graduationWho couldn’t see this one coming?

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Friday that Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell have been “relieved of their duties” aka fired.

This move was inevitable ever since Tony La Russa was hired in May as the team’s chief baseball operator. First it was GM Kevin Towers who got the axe earlier this month, and now it’s Gibby and Trammell.

In his first season as manager in 2010, Gibson helped lead the Diamondbacks to a 94-68 record and playoff appearance, which was an incredible turnaround from a 65-97 season the year before. He followed up his strong debut with a pair of 81-81 seasons. This year Arizona has been a huge disappointment as the last-place team in the NL West. They entered Friday’s game 63-96.

These moves come at the same time the team hired former A’s pitcher Dave Stewart as the new GM. Prior to becoming the D-backs’ GM, Stewart worked as an agent. Keep an eye out for Ron Washington as a potential candidate to replace Gibby.
