Houston Astros infielder Luis Guillorme on Monday submitted his bid for this season’s Catch of the Year.
The Astros led the Athletics 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, Calif. A’s slugger Tyler Soderstrom was at the plate to lead off the inning against Astros starter Ryan Gusto.
Soderstrom popped up a 1-2 changeup that looked destined to touch outfield grass in shallow left field. But it just so happened to enter Guillorme’s no-fly zone.
The hefty infielder went airborne himself to make the catch, preventing what could have been a leadoff double.

The contest against the A’s was just Guillorme’s third game in an Astros uniform. The fourth-inning play was a heck of a way to endear himself to Houston’s coaching staff early.
The Astros signed Guillorme to a minor league deal in February. He batted .248 with 2 home runs and 22 RBIs over 57 games with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Astros’ Triple-A affiliate.
Guillorme has made a name for himself as a plus defender who can play at third base, second base, or shortstop. He proved Monday that he can make plays in the outfield as well.
Fans may also remember Guillorme for catching a flying bat in the dugout during his time with the New York Mets.
