Mariners share update on concerning Bryan Woo injury

The Seattle Mariners have given an initial update on Bryan Woo, who left Friday’s game against the Houston Astros early due to injury.

Woo appeared to be in serious discomfort after cruising through five scoreless innings at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas. Mariners trainers came to Woo’s aid as he labored through his warmup pitches for the sixth inning.

Woo allowed just one hit and one walk, which both came in the fourth inning. He looked poised for a long outing, with seven strikeouts on 67 pitches before being taken off the mound. The Mariners’ bullpen kept the Astros scoreless for a 4-0 Seattle win.

After the game, Mariners skipper Dan Wilson told reporters that Woo was dealing with “pec tightness.” Wilson added that Woo had felt some pain even before warming up in the sixth inning, which is why Seattle already had Eduard Bazardo getting loose early.

“You’re obviously concerned in some ways,” Wilson said when asked about the team’s level of concern. “But I think in other ways, Bryan, he’s a tough cookie. It was smart that he let us know. There was no reason to push it.”

Woo is expected to get an MRI on Saturday.

Losing Woo for an extended period of time would be a huge blow for a Mariners team fighting for a playoff berth. The All-Star right-hander has arguably been the ace in a stacked Seattle rotation. Woo has a 2.94 ERA and 0.93 WHIP across 30 starts in a season that saw him earn his first All-Star nod and threaten for an early-season no-hitter.
