Marlins president David Samson reportedly says Miami people are stupid, cares more about money than fans

I don’t know anything about Miami Marlins president David Samson, but if the reported comments he recently made are accurate, he’s a pretty awful guy.

Speaking at a Beacon Council breakfast meeting about the new Marlins ballpark Tuesday, Samson called Miami people stupid, while showing how business-oriented he is.

According to Miami Today News, Samson prefaced his remarks by saying he didn’t have to hold back anymore now that the stadium was built. Then he began blasting people left and right.

Samson reportedly called politicians “not the intellectual cream of the crop,” adding that “We’re not the smartest people in Miami. If you’re in this room, you’re instantly in the top 1%.”

Samson said he visited San Antonio and Las Vegas before the Marlins got a new park in Miami. That’s when he said it doesn’t matter if the team has fans.

If the Marlins were to move to Las Vegas, Mr. Samson said, he suggested the casinos there buy out game tickets in advance so nobody would be drawn away from the casinos.

“We don’t care if nobody comes,” Mr. Samson recalled with a smile. “We’ll play in front of nobody, and we’ll have all the money.”

While Samson was busy disparaging everything in sight, he naturally did not spare free agent acquisition Jose Reyes.

“I really want to play in Miami as long as you pay me $1 more than anyone else,” Samson recalls Reyes telling the Marlins. “I really want to make the most money I can.”

According to The Miami Herald, Samson denied making those critical comments and says his remarks were taken out of context. It’s up to you to decide if you believe him.

If you believe the initial report, it would be difficult to support the team knowing that’s how the franchise president feels about fans. I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable giving him and the team any money after that.
