The New York Mets are making some sweeping changes after their late-season collapse caused them to miss the playoffs.

The Mets are dismissing nearly their entire coaching staff, the team confirmed Friday. Bench coach John Gibbons resigned, while pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and hitting coaches Jeremy Barnes and Eric Chavez were let go.

Of the team’s on-field staff, only first base coach Antoan Richardson will return under manager Carlos Mendoza for 2026.

Changes were inevitable after the Mets lost 14 of their final 21 games despite a payroll that hovered around $342 million. While Mendoza will return for 2026, few other players or staff can be as confident in their status moving forward.

There are certainly some players who will be back, including Juan Soto, whose $765 million contract ensures he will be with the Mets for the long haul. Some other important players are set to test free agency, though, and may have played their final game for the team.

The Mets went just 83-79 this season. They still would have made the playoffs had they won two of their last three games against the lowly Miami Marlins, but they could not even manage that.
