Mets discussing trade for Starling Marte?

The New York Mets agreed to terms with reliever Dellin Betances earlier this week, and now it may be time to address the other side of the ball.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweeted Thursday that the Mets have exchanged names with the Pittsburgh Pirates on a potential trade for Starling Marte. Heyman adds that, while nothing is imminent, Mets outfielder Brandon Ninmo’s name has come up though the Pirates might prefer prospects.

Marte, a former All-Star and two-time Gold Glover, is coming off a career year in which he hit .295 with 23 home runs and 82 RBIs. He is under contract for $11.5 million next season with a $12.5 million team option for 2021.

While Marte is already 31 years old and has some baggage attached to him, his combination of power, speed, and defense could really help a Mets team that came just three games away from making the playoffs last season.
