Mets player offers trash talk for Dodgers

A New York Mets player is feeling very confident despite his team’s loss in the NLCS to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.

Speaking this week with Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez said that he believes his team has the best lineup in baseball. Alvarez specifically mentioned too that he thought the Mets had a better lineup than the Dodgers.

“I think we are better than the Dodgers [lineup],” Alvarez was quoted as saying.

Alvarez’s comment comes in the wake of a major offseason of spending by the Mets. On top of adding Juan Soto on a historic 15-year, $765 million contract, the Mets also picked up pitchers Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, AJ Minter, and Ryne Stanek. Additionally, the Mets managed to bring first baseman Pete Alonso, pitcher Sean Manaea, and outfielder Jesse Winker on new contracts.

The 23-year-old Alvarez should indeed be feeling confident about his team, but specifically mentioning the Dodgers felt a bit personal. It is also worth noting that Alvarez had beef with the Dodgers during their meeting in the 2024 NLCS.

Alvarez, who hit .237 last season with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 100 games, will have to wait a little while to make good on his trash talk as the Dodgers and Mets do not play each other in the 2025 campaign until late May. But it would hardly surprise anyone if those two teams end up facing one another in the league championship series once again.
