Report: Mets only talked to Yoenis Cespedes about short term deal, talks are over

Yoenis Cespedes Mets

Yoenis Cespedes reportedly won’t be returning to the New York Mets.

The Mets are targeting more complementary outfielders such as Steve Pearce, according to CBS Sports’s Jon Heyman, and there will be no reunion with Cespedes.

The only dialogue the Mets have reportedly had with Cespedes was a short term deal of two to three years. Unsurprisingly, the two sides never even talked dollar amounts, as Cespedes should have little issue getting a five year commitment at minimum from another team. Talks between the two parties are over.

This should come as no real surprise. Mets ownership has been extremely hesitant to spend big money in free agency in recent years, and they’re not willing to make an exception for Cespedes. It’s almost insulting that they tried to offer him a two or three year deal, though.
