If baseball were middle school, then Michael Taylor would be pretending to be sick tomorrow and begging his mommy to let him stay home from school to avoid the teasing from his friends, because his Wednesday night was BRUTAL.
The Washington Nationals center fielder went 0-for-5 at the plate, which is bad enough already. But it wasn’t just any 0-for-5. He struck out five times in that 0-for-5, allowing him to achieve the rarely accomplished but widely appreciated Platinum Sombrero.
Now that alone would qualify for a newsworthy post, but it’s what Taylor did in the field that put the whipped cream and cherry on top of his ice cream sundae of screw-ups. The dude misplayed a Yasiel Puig groundball single up the middle in the 9th inning, and his error allowed Howie Kendrick to score from first base to tie the game, and Puig to belly-flop into home for the winning 2-run Little League home run.
