Mets’ Mickey Callaway has odd quote about scoreboard watching

August 4, 2019 by Grey Papke • Comments

Once the calendar turns to August, contending teams typically start to pay attention to what their rivals are doing, even though players and coaches will say it’s not something they’re paying attention to. It would be a big stretch to call the 54-56 New York Mets a contender, but their manager is scoreboard watching anyway — in a strange manner.

Callaway said Saturday that he does scoreboard watch — but he’s usually keeping an eye on the New York Yankees, a team in a different league altogether.

I asked Mickey Callaway earlier if he scoreboard watches: "A little bit," Callaway said. Then he added he mostly checks what the Yankees are doing.

The Yankees have little bearing on the Mets aside from sharing a city. They’re in different leagues and, unless they’re playing interleague, have no relevance to what the Mets or their rivals are doing. It really just makes Callaway look like he has a strange chip on his shoulder when it comes to the more successful city rivals, and that’s probably not something the Mets manager should be worrying about during games.

It’s absolutely a minor thing. But when you consider some of the other things Callaway has done as manager, it just adds to a lengthy list of less-than-impressive moments.
