MLB All-Star outfielder suffers torn ACL

An MLB All-Star is out for the remainder of 2025 and possibly for a good chunk of 2026 as well.

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Tuesday that outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has suffered a right ACL tear. Arizona is calling up infielder Connor Kaiser from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.

Dbacks manager Torey Lovullo later told reporters that Gurriel is expected to miss 8-to-12 months with the injury. That would mean that Gurriel’s 2026 campaign could be in jeopardy too.

Gurriel was an All-Star in 2023 with the Dbacks and has remained one of their more productive power bats. This season for Arizona, Gurriel was batting .248 with 19 home runs, 80 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases through 129 games. Gurriel had been offering positional versatility too with his ability to play first base and designated hitter in addition to his primary spot in left field.

Set to turn 32 years old next month, Gurriel now faces an uphill climb to return to the lineup in time for next year. He has a $13 million player option for next season (which Gurriel will presumably be picking up now) and a $14 million club option for the 2027 campaign.

The Gurriel news continues on a brutal 2025 season for the Dbacks. After they made the World Series in 2023 and won 89 games in 2024, Arizona now sits at 68-71, which is fourth in the NL West. The Dbacks also traded away several notable names at the deadline (including Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suarez, and Merrill Kelly), and they still appear to be facing some concerning internal dysfunction as well.
