Report: MLB expected to investigate Shohei Ohtani signing
Major League Baseball is on heightened alert as to any potential wrongdoing in the courtship of Shohei Ohtani.
ESPN’s Buster Olney reported Friday that the Ohtani recruitment has been given “extraordinary scrutiny” by the league office, who recognize that the opportunity is there for potential wrongdoing in the form of third-party dealing and illegal discussion of future business opportunities.
With that in mind, various officials believe that there will be an extensive investigation into Ohtani’s signing to ensure that nothing illegal took place.
“The commissioner’s attention on this has been unprecedented,” one team executive told Olney. “There’s a lot of avenues for cheating, and I think [MLB is] well-aware of that.”
Given what went down with the Atlanta Braves, it’s no surprise that international dealings like this would be subject to extreme scrutiny. The Los Angeles Angels will be landing Ohtani, and to be clear, there is no indication that they did anything wrong — and MLB will make sure of it.
