Major League Baseball took action against two San Diego Padres players in response to an incident at the conclusion of the team’s loss in Game 3 of the National League Wild Card series.

Padres infielder Jose Iglesias will have to serve a one-game suspension next season after confronting the umpires at the end of San Diego’s 3-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Ill. last Friday. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts was fined, but not suspended.

Padres infielder José Iglesias received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for unprofessional conduct toward the umpires after Game 3 of the WC round. Xander Bogaerts was fined.

Padres players were livid after a terrible call cost them a baserunner while they were trying to rally and save their season. Iglesias was among a number of players who confronted the umpires as they left the field after the loss (video here).

Obviously, the terrible call came at the worst possible time for the Padres, and was magnified by the fact that they appeared to be making a last stand when it blunted their momentum. The players’ anger was understandable in the moment, but at the same time, they were being shut out until the 9th inning.

MLB has already announced that an automated ball-strike challenge system will be enacted for the 2026 season. It did not come soon enough for the Padres, but perhaps they can take some solace in the fact that such a call will be able to be challenged next year.
