MLB players who want to make use of the new challenge system for balls and strikes are going to have to make up their minds quickly if they want those challenges to be recognized.
Houston Astros infielder Cavan Biggio found out the hard way that the new ABS challenge rules contain a strange caveat that could particularly impact hitters. During Sunday’s spring training game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Biggio took a 3-2 pitch on the inside corner for called strike three. Biggio flipped his bat, believing he had drawn a walk, before tapping his helmet to challenge the call.
To challenge, however, the signal has to come immediately. Since Biggio flipped his bat before tapping his helmet, that was considered too long of a delay, and the challenge was not granted.

While this may seem harsh, there is a legitimate reason why MLB wants challenges to be immediate. The league does not want anyone on the field being assisted by anyone in the dugout on whether to challenge or not. Giving players time to consider a challenge risks that outcome.
Some players might have to adapt to this, because an instant gesture of frustration might rob them of the chance to challenge. The new system has also created some awkward moments for umpires, too.
