Major League Baseball is handing out a suspension and multiple fines for Tuesday night’s incident between the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies.
MLB announced on Wednesday that they are suspending Giants third baseman Matt Chapman for one game over his role in a benches-clearing brawl against the Rockies during Tuesday’s game. Meanwhile, Kyle Freeland of the Rockies as well as Willy Adames and Rafael Devers of the Giants have all been hit with undisclosed fines as well.
The MLB announcement noted that Chapman was suspended for pushing Freeland during the incident. Chapman is appealing the decision however (per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area) and will thus be eligible to continue playing until the appeal process is complete.
Tuesday’s incident was sparked by a Devers home run off Freeland in the first inning at Coors Field in Denver, Colo. Freeland took exception to Devers admiring the homer, and the two exchanged words as Devers was rounding first base. Chapman and Adames were among the players who escalated the situation from there with both benches emptying as a result.

San Francisco and Colorado, two rivals in the NL West, met for a three-game set this week. The Giants took the first two contests of the series, including winning Tuesday’s game by a final score of 7-4 after the benches-clearing incident. The two sides then met again on Wednesday (with Chapman still in the starting lineup for San Francisco amid the appeal of his suspension).
