The MLBPA is making some alternate plans as spring training nears and many of the game’s top free agents remain unsigned.
Yahoo Sports’ Tim Brown reported on Wednesday that the MLBPA is making preparations to organize its own spring training. He says they are exploring potential locations in Arizona and Florida. Brown also reports they are looking into who might help staff and coach the separate spring training.
The possibility of a separate spring training has been previously reported.
Pitchers and catchers are set to report for many MLB teams early next week. Position players are set to report about a week later, with the first spring game between teams set for Feb. 23.
Players do not want to lose any leverage as they wait for MLB teams meet their contract expectations. Keeping their games sharp and training on their own as if they were preparing for the upcoming season is important in case they finally sign.
