New Yankees pitcher had words for the Marlins after trade

The New York Yankees made a move to address depth in their pitching rotation by trading for southpaw Ryan Weathers of the Miami Marlins. In return, the Marlins got a total of four prospects in outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones and infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus.

Weathers spent parts of three seasons with the Marlins, who acquired him in 2023 via a trade with the San Diego Padres.

Following the news of his trade to the Yankees, the 26-year-old Weathers sent a classy message to the Marlins, while also showing his excitement for what lies ahead in the Bronx.

Weathers isn’t going to forget his time with the Marlins, but the reality of becoming a Yankee must be very thrilling for him. For one, it was the team that his father, David, won a World Series with in 1996.

Interestingly enough, David was traded by the Florida Marlins to New York in 1996 and pitched for 11.0 innings in that year’s postseason, allowing just an earned run on six hits across seven appearances.

FanGraphs projects Weathers as the No. 4 starter to begin the 2026 MLB season, with Carlos Rodon, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt all unlikely to be ready for Opening Day.

In 27 appearances, including 26 starts, with the Marlins, Weathers went 7-10 with a 4.11 ERA and a 4.51 FIP through 138.0 innings.
