Yankees will honor David Ortiz on September 29 at Yankee Stadium

The David Ortiz farewell tour will make a stop at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, September 29.

Without pomp and circumstance, the New York Yankees quietly announced on Thursday that they will, in fact, hold an on-field ceremony for one of their long-time arch rivals prior to their game against the Boston Red Sox on the 29th.

Leading up to Thursday’s announcement, there had been some speculation about whether or not the Bronx Bombers would honor Ortiz. But in typical Yankees fashion, they’ll tip their cap to one of the most feared AL East hitters of the last decade and a half.

In doing so, the Yankees will repay the Red Sox, who hosted very respectful farewell ceremonies for both short stop Derek Jeter and closer Mariano Rivera.

In 236 career games against the Yankees, Ortiz has hit .305 with 52 home runs and 166 RBIs. He was also a main cog in Boston’s 2003 lineup, which saw their long-time misfortunes finally come to an end at the Yankees’ expense.

Ortiz and the Red Sox open up a four-game homestand with the Yankees on Thursday night before closing out their season series on September 27-29.

Following the conclusion of the 2016 season, Ortiz will officially retire from Major League Baseball.
