Pascual Perez reportedly killed in robbery over pension payment

Former MLB pitcher Pascual Perez reportedly was killed on Thursday when he was stabbed during a robbery at his home in the Dominican Republic.

According to reports, Perez, who pitched 11 seasons in the bigs and was an All-Star in 1983, received his MLB pension payment on Wednesday (supposedly for $2,000). A group of robbers entered his home in Don Gregorio de Nigua on Thursday to rob him. He ended up dying of a stab wound to the neck.

Perez, 55, was 67-68 over his 11 seasons in the bigs and posted a career 3.44 ERA. He pitched for the Pirates, Braves, Expos, and Yankees.

FOX Sports adds this great information about Perez to provide background for the younger fans:

Perez was noted for his exaggerated celebrations on the mound, which often drew the ire of opposing batters. He infamously once missed a start with the Braves because he got lost on the freeways while driving to his home stadium. He was a central figure in a wild 1984 game between the Padres and Braves that featured multiple brawls and players going after fans. Perez hit leadoff batter Alan Wiggins to start the game, and the Padres threw at Perez several times in the game before ultimately getting their retribution.

Perez’s two brothers also were MLB pitchers. Carlos pitched from 1995-2000, and Melido’s career spanned from 1987-1995. Carlos is also remembered for his flamboyant celebrations and short temper.
