The Philadelphia Phillies are hiring a general manager with a pretty famous last name.

In a release on Friday, the Phillies announced that they are promoting Preston Mattingly to their vice president and GM position. The Phillies also announced that Sam Fuld, who had been serving as their vice president and GM, is taking time off to pursue an MBA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Fuld will then transition to the president of business operations role for the Phillies upon his graduation in May 2026.

Preston is the son of former New York Yankees All-Star and MVP Don Mattingly, who also later went on to manage for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins. Having first joined the Phillies in 2021 to run their player development system, Preston was promoted to assistant GM in 2023 and is now getting promoted again to vice president and GM.

Prior to joining the Phillies, Preston had five years of experience with the San Diego Padres, serving in various scouting director roles. His latest promotion by the Phillies also comes just weeks after the team made another major personnel decision.
