Report: Rangers looking to trade Derek Holland

Derek Holland

The Texas Rangers are looking to trade pitcher Derek Holland, according to a report.

Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball reports the news and says the Rangers are open to trading the southpaw. If they are unable to deal him, they may try to buy him out of his contract.

Holland has a reasonable contract — he’s set to make $11 million next season and $11.5 million the year after that — both of which are club options. His buyout is $1.5 million for next season and $1 million in 2018.

The issue with Holland is his health. He only made five starts in 2014; 10 starts in 2015; and he made 20 starts this season. Not only has he struggled with his health, but he also posted a 4.91 ERA last year and a 4.95 ERA this season, so his production has slipped too.

Holland was solid from 2011-2013, when he went 38-21 and twice posted a sub-4.00 ERA. Some team may view him as a potential bounceback candidate next season.
