Red Sox send Alex Cora packing after 10-17 start

The Boston Red Sox have sent Alex Cora to the unemployment line.

Cora will have to look for another job somewhere else after the Red Sox fired him, along with other coaches, on Saturday.

Also let go by Boston are bench coach Ramon Vazquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin. Meanwhile, run prevention coach Jason Varitek is moving on to a different role in the organization, reported Jorge Castillo of ESPN.

This series of moves came amid the club’s ugly start to the 2026 MLB season.

Interestingly enough, Cora’s final game as Red Sox manager was a 17-1 demolition of the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Md. That win snapped the Red Sox’s four-game losing streak, but it was clearly not enough to save Cora from getting canned. Through 27 games, Boston only has a 10-17 record to show, still the worst in the American League East through Saturday.

Firing Cora, who led the Red Sox to a World Series title in 2018, came as a surprise to many despite Boston’s struggles.

After the Boston missed the playoffs three years in a row amid a rebuild, Cora guided the club back to the postseason in 2025, when they finished with 89 wins.  But it is going to be another man handling the Red Sox from the bench going forward. For now, it’s Chad Tracy filling the void left open by Cora’s exit. Tracy had managed the Red Sox’s top affiliate Worcester since 2022.
