The Cincinnati Reds were circling the drain, virtually assured of absorbing a loss when they entered the ninth inning of their game against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, trailing 9-3.

But a baseball miracle happened at Oracle Park in San Francisco, Calif., with more than 24,000 fans witnessing the Reds overcome the deficit and pull off a 10-9 win — in historic fashion.

It was just the third time in Reds history that they won a game despite being down by at least six runs going into the ninth inning, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

Cincinnati started its incredible comeback in the ninth inning with rookie Hector Rodriguez hitting his second home run of the game to cut the Giants’ lead to 9-4. Elly De La Cruz then singled, followed by two walks to load the bases. Eugenio Suarez then hit a grand slam to get the Reds within a run at 9-8.

Here is a video of that monster shot from Suarez.

Jose Trevino’s sacrifice fly after bunt singles from Dane Myers and Matt McClain tied the game at 9-9. An RBI single from pinch-hitter Tyler Stephenson gave Cincinnati the go-ahead run.

It was an incredible way for the Reds to win the game and an agonizing manner to lose for the Giants.

The last time Cincinnati won a game despite trailing by six runs or more heading into the ninth inning was in 1958.
