The Cincinnati Reds are moving on from one of their most beloved hitters.
The Reds have reportedly placed third baseman Eugenio Suarez on outright waivers, paving the way for him to latch onto a contender ahead of the postseason. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Reds outfielder TJ Friedl has also suffered the same fate.
The other 29 MLB teams have 48 hours to claim either player, with the clock starting the moment Cincinnati made the move official. Suarez has less than $3 million remaining on his contract to be paid out this season.
The Reds reunited with Suarez via a one-year, $15 million contract earlier this year. The Venezuelan played for Cincinnati from 2015 to 2021 before stints with the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Suarez was coming off an All-Star campaign in 2025. While he only batted .228 across 159 games combined for the Mariners and D-Backs, Suarez swatted 49 home runs and tallied 118 RBIs — both career highs in a single season.
The 35-year-old has not been nearly as effective in his return to the Reds, entering Wednesday batting .205 with 18 home runs and 53 RBIs through 102 contests.
Suarez, of course, hit a 9th-inning grand slam for his 19th dinger of the season, leading the Reds to a 10-9 comeback win over the Giants after being placed on waivers.
