The New York Mets appear headed for a historic teardown at the 2026 MLB trade deadline.
The Mets lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday to drop to 43-62 on the season. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported on New York’s plan for the deadline late during the FOX broadcast of the contest at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y.
Rosenthal revealed that he expects the Mets to “make at least six trades” before August 3. The veteran reporter pointed toward New York’s incoming free agents, Freddy Peralta, Brooks Raley, and A.J. Minter, as probable pitchers to be dealt during the deadline frenzy.
Starting pitcher Clay Holmes, who holds a player option, is reportedly “in demand.” He would likely test free agency should he not be traded, giving the team every reason to field offers for his services. The Mets are reportedly not interested in signing him to an extension.
Rosenthal also mentioned outfielders Tyrone Taylor and Luis Robert Jr. as trade candidates.
The “big question” for the Mets is said to be surrounding what the team plans to do with standout reliever Luke Weaver. New York still has him under team control through the 2027 season but may get some pretty enticing offers for the bullpen arm sporting a 1.98 ERA across 39 games.
The Mets could look drastically different in a week, especially if New York is truly entertaining trade offers for some of the team’s star infielders.
