Rockies make major change amid historically bad start

The Colorado Rockies snapped an eight-game losing streak with their win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, but they have still decided to fire their manager.

After they beat the Padres 9-3 at Coors Field in Denver, Colo., the Rockies announced that they have fired Bud Black. The longtime manager was in his ninth season with the franchise.

Black finishes with a record of 544-690 in Colorado. He led the Rockies to the playoffs in his first two seasons in 2017 and 2018, but they have not been back since.

Bench coach Mike Redmond was also fired by Colorado, with Warren Schaeffer being promoted to interim manager.

The Rockies improved to just 7-33 with Sunday’s win. They suffered their worst shutout loss in franchise history when the Padres beat them 21-0 on Saturday. Even a young fan trolled the team with an insulting sign during that game.

The Chicago White Sox set a modern-day MLB record last year when they lost 121 games. This year’s Rockies team could be even worse. They are on pace to have the worst run differential for a team in more than 60 years by an extremely wide margin.

Given the roster that they have assembled, the Rockies did the 67-year-old Black a favor by firing him now.
