Rockies outfielder makes acrobatic catch to save fan

Colorado Rockies right fielder Nick Martini may be getting a call from USA Gymnastics in the near future.

On Friday, Martini put on an incredible balancing act during the Rockies’ afternoon game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. During the bottom of the third inning, Martini tracked a foul ball off the bat of Padres outfielder Jason Heyward all the way to the fence in foul ground.

The ball was about to fall near an unsuspecting fan standing next to the railing. The fan, who seemed to be on her phone, only noticed the ball hurtling toward her when it was too late to move away.

Luckily for the fan, Martini came to her rescue.

The six-year MLB veteran dove past the railing to make the catch and prevent the ball from potentially hitting the fan. The momentum would have sent Martini over the fence had it not been for his elite balance and core strength. Kudos to the fan as well for trying to help boost her knight in shining armor back onto the field.

Given how low the ground was past the railing, Martini could have legitimately gotten himself hurt had he not managed to break his fall.

Last week, Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles made a similar catch over the right-field fence. But Robles suffered a serious shoulder injury to make the play.
