Gerrit Cole had quite the reaction when he learned that the New York Yankees had made him a record contract offer.
Cole recounted during his introductory press conference on Wednesday that he was actually so stunned by the Yankees’ nine year, $324 million contract offer that he was silent, which prompted an amazing quote from his agent, Scott Boras.
“G, are you there?” Cole recounted Boras saying, via Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. “You’re supposed to be f—ing screaming right now.”
While there was no screaming, it was pretty clear that Cole was overwhelmed by the amount of money the Yankees were willing to pay him. It’s not really any surprise that he accepted that offer, no matter the sacrifices he had to make.
Cole had a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts last season for the Houston Astros. He’ll be hoping that his numbers and performances continue to leave opposing hitters speechless now that he’s in New York.
