Shohei Ohtani Tommy John rumors are news to Mike Scioscia

Shohei Ohtani

The Los Angeles Angels are remaining tight-lipped about the possibility of Shohei Ohtani needing Tommy John surgery.

The latest is manager Mike Scioscia, who said he hasn’t heard anything about the Japanese star needing the procedure.

“I have not heard that,” Scioscia told CBS Sports HQ with Bill Reiter, via Mike Axisa of CBS Sports. “The doctors are obviously very confident that he’s going to get back out there. We’re going to be very conservative with Shohei. We’ll see when, first and foremost, the elbow is sound enough to where he can swing a bat. I think that’ll happen before he’s going to be out on the mound pitching. But we’re very hopeful that he’s going to be pitching for us again this season.”

This is in line with what GM Billy Eppler said, despite a report that emerged this morning indicating that the surgery was inevitable. The Angels aren’t going to concede that unless they absolutely have to.
