The Yankees had been the favorite to land Gray all along. They were also interested in Texas Rangers starting pitcher Yu Darvish, but he is in the final year of his deal whereas Gray has two years of team control remaining.
Gray, 27, is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA this season.
The Yankees took back first place in the AL East over the weekend, and they obviously feel they can make a deep playoff run. In addition to getting Gray, they also bolstered their starting rotation by trading for left-handed starter Jaime Garcia, formerly of the Minnesota Twins.
