Report: Teams have asked about Wade Davis, asking price very high
With the Kansas City Royals treading water, teams have begun to wonder if they’d be willing to sell some of their prime assets, and that includes Wade Davis.
According to Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball, teams have inquired about the Royals’ closer, but came away finding that the asking price is extremely high. In fact, the Royals are asking for more in return for Davis than the Yankees are in talks about Aroldis Chapman.
Davis, who has an ERA of exactly 1.00 since being converted to a reliever full time at the start of the 2014 season, also has an affordable team option for 2017 which will be picked up by whichever team controls him at that point. He’s a dominant reliever and not a rental, so the Royals are well within their rights to want a real haul if they trade him.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that the Royals are even going to sell. In fact, they’ve reportedly been eyeing a pair of outfielders they can buy at the deadline. They’re 8 games out in the division, though, and 5 games behind in the wild card. They’ll have some tough decisions to make in the next week.
