It will be all hands on deck for the Boston Red Sox during the AL Wild Card series.
Red Sox lefty Garrett Crochet is expected to be available out of the bullpen for the team this postseason, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported on Tuesday. Morosi adds that Crochet previously had success pitching out of the bullpen for the Chicago White Sox during their playoff runs in 2020 and 2021.
Crochet, 27, has missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury. He has not pitched in a single Major League game since late April and had posted an ugly 6.30 ERA over six total starts this year before getting hurt.
But Crochet, a two-time MLB All-Star and a former MLB strikeouts leader, has been eyeing a return during the postseason for some time now. We even learned earlier this month that the Red Sox were considering a pretty risky move with him.
At 84-73, Boston is officially locked into an AL Wild Card spot. They will most likely be facing the rival New York Yankees in the Wild Card round, where Crochet could make his first MLB appearance in over five months.
Crochet is making solid progress in his throwing program and notably faced live hitters on Tuesday for the first time since May. With Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, Payton Tolle, Jake Bennett, and Patrick Sandoval holding it down in the rotation, the Red Sox will have plenty of firepower with which to approach October.
