A surprising team has shown preliminary interest in signing Walker Buehler in free agency.

Oakland Athletics manager Mark Kotsay admitted Wednesday that the team had been in contact with Buehler about potentially signing. Kotsay did not suggest anything was close, however.

This is definitely a surprising free agency pursuit. The A’s have a reputation for not spending significant cash, through Buehler may be available on a shorter prove-it deal after a rough 2024 regular season. He came on strong in the playoffs, however, and likely rebuilt some of his value. From the Athletics’ perspective, with their impending move to Sacramento before a permanent relocation to Las Vegas, they may want to add some star power to their ranks.

More realistically, contending teams are likely to pursue Buehler. If he wants to have a shot at winning, the A’s are going to be a tough sell for him.

Buehler posted a 5.38 ERA in 16 regular season starts last season, but kept that number down at 3.60 in 15 playoff innings.
