Look: Wednesday’s Royals crowd was unbelievably small
Major League Baseball day games in April can sometimes be lightly-attended affairs, but Wednesday’s game between the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays redefined that entirely.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan tweeted out a photo of the stands at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday, and it looked like you could count the game’s attendees individually.
I know that it's a Wednesday afternoon during the school year in a city that doesn't draw well against a team that doesn't attract a road crowd. But I've never seen so few people at a major league game as the one just starting now between Kansas City and Tampa Bay. pic.twitter.com/z3QUdfdWiT

The weather looks bad and Passan makes good points about scheduling and the teams on display, but it’s still an unbelievably low attendance. Sometimes that’s what happens when games are rescheduled due to the weather, as was the case here.
The light crowd does compare to some midwest April attendances we’ve seen in the past. A bad home team, bad weather, and day games when kids are still in school tend to conspire to lead to some rather embarrassing visuals.
