Report: Yankees expected to target Patrick Corbin in free agency

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are expected to target pitcher Patrick Corbin in free agency this offseason, according to a report.

Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman says the Yankees will make a play for Corbin. He also says the Yankees may consider bringing back lefties JA Happ and CC Sabathia.

Sabathia, 38, will be a free agent, while Happ, who was acquired in a trade with Toronto, will also be a free agent. The Diamondbacks are expected to give Corbin a qualifying offer, which would attach draft pick compensation to him if he signs elsewhere.

Corbin, 29, grew up a Yankees fan and could fill a big need for a lefty pitcher for the team. He went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA and 1.05 WHIP this season, with 246 strikeouts in 200 innings for Arizona. He is a two-time All-Star and missed the 2014 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Corbin was originally a second-round pick by the Angels and was traded to Arizona in the 2010 Dan Haren deal.
