Not for the first time, Cincinnati Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig has tried to explain the logic behind him occasionally licking his bat.
Puig has a habit of licking his bat while hitting, but he says he thinks of ice cream while doing it. He admitted that “sometimes it’s not good,” but even then, “at least I’m giving love to my bat.”
The underlying reason? In Puig’s mind, “something good [is] coming when I lick my bat.”

It’s fairly consistent with the explanation he gave on the same topic last season. The guy loves his bat and wants to repay it for a job well done — plus, he’s just a superstitious guy who believes it’s a good luck charm. He’s barely hitting over .200 to start 2019, so maybe it just isn’t responding yet.
