Zack Wheeler threw a changeup of an answer on Tuesday when it came to questions about his potential retirement.
Reports emerged last season stating that Wheeler was “unequivocal” about retiring once his contract expires by the end of the 2027 season. But the Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher didn’t sound so resolute when asked to speak about his future following another stellar start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 36-year-old went seven innings strong in a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers, allowing just a pair of runs on 5 hits at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa. He struck out nine batters without allowing a walk in his first start since the All-Star break.
“Never say never,” Wheeler told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale when asked about potentially staving off retirement beyond 2027. “We’ll see. It’ll probably depend on what happens next year. It’s something to think about for sure.
“It’s tough. My kids are growing up, and they’re at that age where it’s important to have both parents around. I’m going to be there for that and see them grow and be successful in life. So, we’ll see.”
The Phillies front office reportedly believes that Wheeler will eventually change his mind and sign an extension with the team later on. Per Nightengale, the team would be “all ears” the moment Wheeler opens up such conversations.
Wheeler also discussed the possibility of building up his resume for potential entry into Cooperstown. He called the prospect of making it into the Hall of Fame “life-changing” and something he doesn’t take lightly. But added that he’s a family man who’s ready to listen to his body if “that time calls.”
The Phillies veteran has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. He’s posted a 2.16 ERA with a 0.88 WHIP across exactly 100 innings pitched this season. But somehow, the man was snubbed from the initial list of MLB All-Stars.
