Anthony Edwards explains why he got in LeBron James’ face

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Anthony Edwards had an animated reaction to LeBron James during Game 4 of the Western Conference first-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers, and he is explaining why.

Edwards screamed in James’ face and gave him a shove late in the first half of Sunday’s game at Target Center in Minneapolis, Mn. The moment garnered some attention, particularly since the Timberwolves were losing at the time.

After the game, Edwards suggested that he was not necessarily taunting James or trying to disrespect him. Instead, he was simply trying to send a message on behalf of his team.

“I wouldn’t say I was trying to make a point, but just let him know that we’re here. You ain’t just gonna push us around all night,” Edwards said. “I’m not going to lie, he’s strong. … Just letting him know that we’re going to be here all night. I’m (gonna) be a pest to him whenever I get on him. I’m gonna try and get up under his skin.”

With that explanation, the timing and manner of Edwards’ move makes more sense. The Lakers may have been up at the time, but Edwards clearly wanted to demonstrate that they would not be rolling over.

The Timberwolves did ultimately back up the message. They won 116-113, albeit under controversial circumstances, to take a 3-1 lead in the series. Edwards very much led the way with 43 points and 9 rebounds, so if the Lakers did not get the message from his move on James, they certainly did through his performance.
