Ben Simmons cracks joke in response to Donovan Mitchell

Ben Simmons

Ben Simmons made a clever joke at Donovan Mitchell’s expense following the Philadelphia 76ers’ win on Tuesday.

Simmons and Mitchell are the two top candidates for this season’s Rookie of the Year honors. Mitchell was selected No. 13 overall during last year’s draft. Simmons was taken No. 1 overall in 2016. However, due to Simmons not playing last season because of a foot injury, he has rookie status for this season, as does Mitchell.

Whether he should be considered a rookie considering he spent last season with the Sixers, albeit not in a playing capacity, has been a hot topic this season. Prior to Utah’s game on Tuesday, Mitchell wore a sweatshirt with the definition of “rookie” on the front as his way of stumping for himself.

Following Philadelphia’s victory over the Hawks, Simmons addressed Mitchell’s attire by joking that we shouldn’t expect to see him in a sweatshirt tomorrow.

In addition to Mitchell, one NBA head coach has chimed in with his thoughts on whether or not Simmons should be classified as a rookie. The league has had co-winners for in the past with Elton Brand and Steve Francis sharing honors for the 1999-2000 season. Could it happen again this year?
