Brandon Roy making NBA comeback

Brandon Roy retired after last season because of chronic knee problems, but the former Trail Blazers guard is ready to make a comeback.

Roy expressed plans to resume his professional basketball career while tweeting from the Twitter account of Will Conroy, his former University of Washington teammate. The two played basketball on Friday and Roy answered several questions from fans afterwards. His responses made it clear he’s attempting an NBA comeback:

@jthompson67 basketball god willing!!!

— will conroy (@CHILLCONROY) June 16, 2012

@JoshHamiltonUW yes I’m preparing for a comeback. I’m training daily

Roy was asked if he was considering returning to play for Portland, the team that drafted him and for whom he played all five years of his NBA career.

“I wish, but due to the NBA rules I cannot play in Portland until 2014-2015,” Roy tweeted. “I’m looking to return sooner. Thanks for your support. I’m fortunate to have played for such a great fan base. No matter where I play, Portland will always have a special place in my heart.”

It looks like the comeback has already begun as Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld says Roy is playing in Jamal Crawford’s Pro-Am this weekend.

Roy saddened many people when he announced his retirement, but there had been constant speculation that he was considering a comeback. At 27, it seems like he should have several years left in him as long as his knees can handle it. Recall that Ron Artest once called Roy the hardest shooting guard to defend in the entire league — including Kobe Bryant. As long as his knees are alright, we figure he can probably help some teams while playing limited minutes.

We hope he can — he was too young to be done with the NBA.
