Carmelo Anthony says he considered going to Wizards

Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony has enjoyed a resurgence of sorts with the Portland Trail Blazers, but he almost ended up on the other side of the country instead.

Speaking Friday before Portland’s game against Washington, the ten-time All-Star said that he considered signing with the Wizards before the Blazers made him an offer.

“In the midst of everything that was over the past year, it was like, ‘Why not try to go play with them?’ Why not go close to home?’” said Anthony, per Michael Lee of The Athletic. “You know, all that stuff came into play. That was kind of the only time I thought about it. If they called, I was ready. Even at that point and time, it was about me getting back in the game. If a team was willing to give me an opportunity, it’s something I would’ve have looked at.”

Anthony lived in nearby Baltimore as a kid and attended high school in Towson, Maryland. The call from the Wizards never came though, and Anthony signed with Portland instead.

The situation worked out nicely, as the veteran forward is now averaging 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds a game for a Blazers team that is closer to contention than the young Wizards. It is still interesting that he considered Washington though, especially since another nearby team pushed for Anthony’s services.
