Derrick Favors thinks mattress may have contributed to back problems

Jazz big man Derrick Favors was recently sidelined for 16 consecutive games due to back spasms. Turns out the whole thing may have been avoided altogether if he had just made a trip to Mattress King.

In an interview ahead of Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bulls, Favors was asked what he could do to prevent the back from flaring up again and responded by singling out some less than ideal sleeping conditions.

“Try not to sleep on my stomach basically,” the former No. 3 overall pick said, per Aaron Falk of the Salt Lake Tribune. “I think that’s what caused it.”

Favors also proceeded to place some of the blame on a faulty mattress.

“I’m in the process of of changing my mattress now,” he continued. “It wasn’t soft, but it was kind of outdated. I had it for a couple of years.”

Favors, 24, is averaging 16.7 points per game, 8.8 rebounds per game, and 1.1 blocks per game this season. But those back problems cost him over a month’s worth of games, and he’s still trying to work his way back into shape having just returned last Monday. As a result of his and frontcourt sidekick Rudy Gobert’s extended absences, the Jazz sit at just 21-25 on the year, currently on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture looking in.

It’s not always easy for a man of the 6-foot-10 Favors’ size to find the perfect mattress. But considering that he’s set to make approximately $12 million this season, you’d think Favors might want to invest in some memory foam.
