Did this video clip hint at Warriors breaking up?

Steve Kerr

The Golden State Warriors will enter the offseason with a lot of question marks whether they win a third consecutive championship or not, as their team could look a lot different next season if Kevin Durant and/or Klay Thompson leave in free agency. Did the two star players recently give a subtle hint indicating that is a possibility?

As part of a special on the Warriors for “60 Minutes,” Durant and Thompson sat down with teammates Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston for a group interview. At one point, the players were asked if they’ve ever wondered how they could play for another team after all the success they have had in Golden State. Fans have taken note of the way Durant and Thompson reacted — or didn’t react.

Should we read into that? Probably not. If you watch more clips from the segment, you’ll see that Durant and Thompson looked like that for the majority of it, even when they were the ones doing the talking. In fact, CBS’ L. Jon Wertheim noted at the start of the interview that the players were “showing some signs of midseason fatigue.” Close-ups of Durant and Thompson were shown as Wertheim made that remark.

The Warriors want to keep both Durant and Thompson, but one seems more likely to leave than the other. Thompson’s father has all but guaranteed his son will remain with the Warriors for years to come, while Durant continues to swat away questions about his future in Golden State. That’s nothing new, and a seeming lack of enthusiasm during a “60 Minutes” interview probably doesn’t tell us a whole lot.
