Dirk Nowitzki is still expected to be out weeks for the Dallas Mavericks.
Nowitzki is recovering from ankle surgery he underwent in April. He experienced a setback last month and on Tuesday, both he and Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said the absence will extend for weeks rather than days.
Weeks, not days, before Dirk Nowitzki will return, both Dirk and Rick Carlisle say.

The Mavericks’ regular season opener is on Oct. 17. Based on what they are saying, Nowitzki may not be available for the first game.
Even though he’s 40, Dirk is still a valuable contributor, especially at a salary of $5 million for the upcoming season. He averaged 12 points on 45.6 percent shooting in 24.7 minutes per game last season.
