The Los Angeles Clippers signed basketball journeyman Jeff Ayres to a ten-day contract on Friday. Widely seen a stopgap substitute for the final stretch of Blake Griffin’s absence or perhaps a filler for the roster spot Josh Smith just vacated, head coach Doc Rivers sees another purpose for Ayres on the roster.
Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Toronto Raptors, Rivers dropped this priceless repartee about Ayres, the former San Antonio Spur who played with the team for two seasons, winning the 2014 NBA championship (per James Herbert of CBS Sports).
Doc Rivers on Jeff Ayres signing: "We just really wanted the San Antonio scouting reports."

Corporate espionage. I like it.
Ayres, 28, holds career averages of 3.0 points per game and 2.8 rebounds per game so he might not serve much of a use for the Clippers on the court these next few days. But if Rivers can pick his brain to try and figure out what exactly it is that makes those damn Spurs so immortally good at basketball, Ayres will have served his purpose.
