Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers sounds like he’s ready to step away from his job.

Rivers was asked Tuesday how much longer he envisions coaching in the NBA, and hinted at retirement in his response. He emphasized the fact that he has grandchildren and priorities outside of the sport.

“I won’t answer that, but I have grandkids that I want to see. I’ll put it that way. I’ll let you figure it out from there,” Rivers said. “I have seven grandkids now and they’re all eight years and under, and it kills me every time I miss grandparents day with each one of them in school. It’s probably time to go see them more, so I’ll let you figure out the rest.”

I asked Doc Rivers how much longer he envisions coaching as he prepares to enter the Hall of Fame. He replied, “I won’t answer that, but I have grandkids that I want to see. I’ll put it that way. In other words, Rivers sounds ready to step away. The Bucks should be able to give him a clean break considering how poorly this season has gone for the team and how players are tuning him out at this point. It appears increasingly likely that he leaves the team after the season, and that might close the book on his final coaching job.

Rivers, 64, is 1,193-864 during his NBA coaching career, and won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2008. His time in Milwaukee has been less successful, with a 96-101 record and some damage to his reputation with how things are ending for him.
